Electronic Dance Music (EDM) has been around since the 70s. The music has changed over the years and each decade it sounds different. People don’t just sit around listening to the song which is being played by the DJ during his set. They jump around and get involved and dance by raising their hands as the song plays.

EDM is created using software programs known as DAWs or digital audio workstations. Some of the popular DAW software programs are FL studio which is what I use, Ableton live, Reason, Cubase, Logic Pro, Pro Tools etc. These software programs are used by DJs, music producers, background music scorers etc. to name a few.

Some of the popular artists today are Martin Garrix and Avicii. Martin Garrix is a DJ/producer who started making music at the age of 16. A year after he released his first track ‘keygen’ he released his breakthrough hit song ‘ Animals’ which gave him instant fame and recognition in the industry. He became the youngest person to reach number 1 on Beatport. He was the first EDM client of Scooter Braun Projects talent management team. Scooter Braun is the talent manager of big time artists such as Justin Bieber , Kanye West , Black Eyed Peas and many more.

Avicii was a producer who at the age of 16 was posting his remixes on Electronic music websites which landed him his first record deal. He rose to fame with his hit song ‘Levels’. He was even nominated for a Grammy award for his work on songs like ‘Levels’ and ‘Sunshine’. He became known as the DJ who increased the popularity of dance music through radio in the early 2010s. He retired from his DJ life of touring in 2016 and died on 20 April 2018. He was a huge insiprational idol for all the DJs and producers who started to rise to fame. There was also a documentary based on his life and his struggles.

EDM is no doubt getting very popular today. Here are five reasons why:

1. No words – The original EDMhas very little to no words at all. Therefore, listeners get hooked purely to the song’s melody. Since there are no words, there are also no language barriers. It is different compared to singing because anyone can learn this music using knowledge, practice and hard work.
2. Unique Sounds– You can create various types of new and unique sounds by tweaking the instruments used in the software. This can be done by using external plugins. These plugins can be downloaded; some are free while most are not. They help you in creating new and unique sounds. With the music that is trending currently among the youth you can create a hit song if the sounds are weird and unique.
3. Easy to produce – Anyone who has a computer and the right kind of software can produce EDM now. I have been doing this for a year now and I am still learning how everything works.
4. Numerous genres– There is a huge variety of genres in EDM. Some of them are Trance, House, Trap, Future Bass, Tropical House Etc. The list of genres keeps increasing frequently when producers experiment with a particular sound and create a new style. This is how new genres are being introduced. As a result, many amazing songs are being released on a day to day basis. Famous pop singers like Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas have started to collaborate with EDM producers, and this popularizes it among their followers who usually tend to listen to pop music and not EDM.
5. Easy to understand– DAWs are easy to understand once you get used to the software program. If you cannot understand and are blank about how to create an EDM song, then there are tutorials on YouTube which will explain how to do everything, right from learning the controls to producing a song.

EDM is a very diverse industry with 60+ genres. It’s also interesting to note how many of these EDM producers are as young as seventeen. They have learned to cash in on the craze by sending their songs to record companies from where their popularity has soared while also making them rich.

EDM is being promoted in dance festivals like Sunburn, Tomorrowland Ultra Music Festival, Electric Zoo, Electric Daisy Carnival and Coachella Valley Music Festival. Tomorrowland is a huge music festival which lasts for 2 weeks with over 1000 artists performing.

The Sunburn Music festival is held in India and it is the largest music festival in Asia. It is a festival which goes on for three days and has DJs and singers from around the world performing. Last year it was held at Vagator, Goa and this year it will be held at Oxford Golf Resort in Pune. This festival usually commences at the end of the year and this year it will be held during 29^th December till 31^st December.
